In this study (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22804876/) scientists wanted to see what happens to testosterone levels in men when they drink or eat something high in carbohydrates. They asked 74 men, some young and some older, to drink a sweet drink with 75 grams of sugar—about as much as two cans of soda. Then, they checked their blood five times over two hours to measure testosterone and sugar.
The Big Surprise
After drinking the sugar, the men’s testosterone dropped by about 25%! That’s as if your superhero power went from 100 to 75 just because you ate a candy bar, drank soda or ate a few doughnuts. It happened to all the men, whether they were healthy or had prediabetes or diabetes.
Why Did It Happen?
Researchers think the sugar messes with the production of testosterone by blocking the brain signal to the testis to make Testosterone. Another hormone called leptin, which helps control hunger, also went down, but they’re not sure why that matters yet.
What Does It Mean?
We must consider that diets high in carbohydrates can keep your testosterone low, and therefore symptomatic. Follow this link to see a list of symptoms.
